Well, if Winter is any sort of example, we are in for a windfall of saving on air conditioning this Summer.
- We live in the south but not far enough south that we don’t need some help from the heat pump in the Winter.
I always start the Winter out with heating maintenance from the HVAC professionals at the HVAC company. But this year, I didn’t have to do that. We actually replaced the residential HVAC in our home early this past fall. The new HVAC equipment is really something. We opted to go with some of the best heating and cooling equipment available. And I’m glad we opted for the higher SEER rating. A SEER rating is actually the measure of efficiency on the heat pump. The old heat pump had a SEER rating of 10. The new heat pump has a SEER rating that is 22. So I figured we’d be saving a good bit on utility costs when it came to the heating and cooling of our home. But I was stunned by the heating costs this Winter. Again, we don’t have near the heating demand of those folks further north who are using gas furnaces and boilers to keep warm. No, we need some heating here for sure. And I just paid more than 30 percent less for heating this Winter over the previous one with the old heat pump. But really, the biggest HVAC cost, by far, is the air conditioning that we need during the Summer months. The hot and humid climate can be overwhelming without air conditioning. And it looks like I’m in for some big time savings thanks to upgrading the HVAC equipment.
