I seem to be waiting for a lot of things, for my stocks to rise, for a new girlfriend, for a reunion with my mother, etc.
But if I spend all my time waiting, I’ll never get to the point in my life where I want to be.
The more I stop waiting for something better, the more I realize that I can find contentment in the present moment, so I’m trying to learn to appreciate what I have even if it feels incomplete. Cleaning this air conditioner part or fixing an oil boiler isn’t exactly the most exciting thing in the world, but if I focus on doing the task at hand, I’ll be able to enjoy it more and it won’t feel like such a chore. After all, you can wait your whole life for something and never be truly satisfied by it. The saleslady for HEPA filters advised me to keep my mind focused on the task at hand, whether it be cleaning a boiler filter or charging an HVAC system, and I soon found that the tasks became much less of a chore and more of a pleasant experience. I’ve been trying to take her advice, and the more I do, the more fun life becomes. When I’m not counting down the minutes until I get to go home, air duct cleaning is one of my favorite things to do. So, instead of constantly waiting for the next big thing, I’ve learned to appreciate the simple tasks like cleaning air conditioner parts or fixing oil boilers, and surprisingly, they’ve become some of my favorite things to do.
