A few years ago, we had a problem with our home’s drainage system. The repairs caused a great deal of disruption and were quite expensive. Replacing the pipes necessitated excavation in the backyard. Our lawn was torn up and several trees and shrubs didn’t survive. The plumber who handled the project told me that most plumbing malfunctions can be prevented with regular maintenance. I had never considered investing into preventive strategies for the plumbing system. I make sure to schedule service for the heating and cooling system and regularly change air filters. I am diligent about having my car’s oil changed and tires rotated. When I considered how much we depend on the plumbing system, it made sense to take better care of it. We use the faucets, shower head, drains, water heater and toilet multiple times per day. I have now enrolled in a service contract with the local plumbing company. They send a licensed plumber to my home every year to complete a thorough inspection. The plumber drains the hot water heater, cleans the aerators on the faucets, cleans the drain lines, inspects the water pump, tests the septic and makes sure that all aspects of the plumbing system are working at peak capacity, efficiency and reliability. I haven’t had a single problem since. The maintenance agreement also provides some convenient and cost-saving perks. I get priority scheduling, discounts on parts and labor and pay no extra overtime fees for emergency service. I also have the peace of mind of knowing there are no hidden leaks or unnoticed problems that could escalate into a great deal of property damage, expense and even a health threat.
