Have you ever been scared of hiring an HVAC technician because you are not sure how good they are? Well, this was my dilemma a few years ago when a professional HVAC contractor fell through the ceiling when fixing the attic AC.
I had not done any due diligence before hiring him since I assumed that he was qualified.
It turns out that he was an apprentice that was marketing himself as the expert under the master’s credentials. It was a panicky moment for a while after he lay flat on the floor for a few minutes. I had been working outdoors, and the thud brought me back in quickly to see what had happened. Once I confirmed his safety, I started considering the amount of damage the fall had caused. It would cost me a few hundred to fix the mess and restore my house to its original state. Unfortunately, the HVAC technician was not able to compensate for any of the damage since he was not even licensed to operate. He did not ask for his pay after the failed service delivery, but I was left with a big pile of mess to fix and a few broken seats to replace. While I eventually got the mess fixed and my mum’s HVAC professional to attend to the attic, I have had this phobia ever since. Unless I know you from a referral I trust, I struggle with hiring new HVAC professionals ever since. Maybe someday, I will outgrow the fear and give some genuine technicians a chance, as I am sure I have dismissed some pretty good ones.
