I sort of think about my heat pump as a bear.
This piece of HVAC equipment stays basically in hibernation all Winter.
Then, like the bear, it slowly comes to life in the Spring. In this region, there are days even in late March where some cooling comfort from the heat pump might be appropriate. But the heat pump isn’t really coming to life quite yet. That’s what’s happening now. Like a bear, the heat pump roars to life with its full energy for the Summer and into early Fall. We are now witnessing the roaring to life of lots of air conditioning bears around here. I walked to get the mail the other morning and I could already hear a chorus of heat pumps singing the cooling song. I hate to admit it but one of those heat pumps was mine as well. I do my best to limit the amount of air conditioning in my home. For one, it’s a bit expensive when you’re living on a tight budget. And the more I lean on the cooling from the heat pump, the more overwhelming the heat feels outside. So I do my best to walk the line between comfort while I sleep and dealing with a higher thermostat setting during the day. Working from home makes managing the thermostat setting a lot easier. I’ve tried to program the thermostat before without much luck. Being home full time working from the central air conditioning is a big help when it comes to keeping the HVAC costs lower through the hottest part of our year. I’m sure that when August rolls around, I’ll be pretty over all the heat. But I also know that the heat pump bear will wind down again before going off to hibernate for another Winter.
