At least we weren’t caught off guard when the HVAC technician told us that our heat pump was at the end.
I have a neighbor who got the same heads up from his HVAC professional.
But he wasn’t ready to replace the residential HVAC in his home so he needed more time to save. That meant that he rolled the dice with an old heat pump and the Summer. We’re not talking about a Summer where you might occasionally need some cooling comfort from air conditioning. Where we live, the heat pump is rolling pretty much day and night come the first of June. That neighbor didn’t get through the Summer with that old heat pump either. So at least we weren’t looking at that scenario. When the HVAC unit turned 20 years old, my wife and I decided to start saving for its replacement. We figured, if we were lucky, we’d have a couple of years to save for the new heating and cooling equipment. Well, we got a lot more than that. After 28 years, the heat pump finally gave up last year. Of course, we had more than enough money for the new residential HVAC and all the new HVAC technology that we really wanted. But the thought of all the hassle to get that project done was not at all appealing. Yet, as it turned out, there wasn’t any hassle at all. The HVAC contractor came out to inspect our ductwork and talk with us about what we wanted out of our new residential HVAC. After that, the HVAC company took care of every single detail. Even the installation was an easy day.
